Fiji, a small island developing state in the South Pacific, is committed to achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The country faces challenges such as climate change and growing urbanization, with 55.9% of the population living in urban areas and 44% of the rural and 26% of the urban population living under the poverty line. Despite the government's procurement power being a driving force for sustainable development, achieving sustainability procurement can be challenging in a small developing country. Key points include the need for a fit-for-purpose procurement framework, capability development, increased resources for sustainable public procurement (SPP), improved data and measurement environment, advanced digital procurement resources, and standardized sustainability impact measurement. The government has initiated some sustainable projects, but implementation has been limited and inconsistent. To address these challenges, Fiji's roadmap to sustainable public procurement includes aligning regulations and policy with best practices, supporting government officials and procurement professionals with training and creating sustainable procurement champions, driving sustainable procurement through a whole-of-government approach, collecting data on the environmental, economic, and social impacts of public procurement, engaging with stakeholders, and leveraging digital procurement.
