a Winning Trading Routine:Habits for Lasting SuccessMarketS 2025 Mid-Year Stock Guide 7Building a Winning Trading Routine:Habits for Lasting Success Feature Article A well-structured daily routine is one of the simplest ways for an investor to bring discipline into their trading, yet its often overlooked.Just as professional athletes use pre-game warmups to pre-pare for peak performance, successful traders need consistent routines that keep them sharp and in sync with the market so theyre in a position to make high-probability decisions.Without structure, you run the risk of reacting to noise rather than following a plan.A thoughtful routineboth before the opening bell and during the criti-cal first 30 minutes of tradingoffers a practical blueprint for any investor looking to trade with confidence. With the right preparation and discipline, you can make more informed decisions and recognize opportunities as they arise.Pre-Market:Your Time to Lay the Groundwork Every good investor knows that the trad-ing day begins long before the opening bell.To get a jump on where the stock market may be headed, start with a scan of index futuresespecially the S&P 500 and the Nasdaq. These pre-market prices can help you gauge market sen-timent and any directional bias before the next trading session begins. While you shouldnt use index futures for exact pricing predictions, taking this step sets the tone so you can make informed decisions about early trades.Next comes news flow, another critical pillar of pre-market prep.MarketSurge aggregates curated headlines from top sources like IBD,MarketWatch,Barrons,The Wall Street Journal and Benzinga. You can access them right next to Mar-ketSurge chartsjust open the Related Information tab to the far right side of the screen and click News. From there, you can choose from a dropdown list of news sources. You might find that major news events such as biotech trial results, earnings announcements or regulatory shifts can completely alter a stocks di-rection overnight.Thats why its a good idea to cross-check headlines against your watchlist to weed out noise from potential opportunities.Another core part of preparation is re-viewing the Market Snapshot section on the MarketSurge homepage.Updated after every market close, this table sum-marizes key signals that investors should look out for, such as portfolio exposure levels and distribution-day counts.Using these indicators to adjust your portfolio exposure will help you align your strate-gy with macro trends and better manage risk, rather than relying on guesswork. To add guardrails to your decisions, you can pair your findings from the Market Snapshot with IBDs Big Picture column. This daily column distills the previous days trading into a concise summary, backed by pricing data, volume and index performance.Integrating both resources can help bring clarity and discipline to your morning routine. This way, youre in the 82025 Mid-Year Stock Guide MarketSdrivers seat with your trading decisions rather than at the mercy of the market. The First 30 Minutes:Managing Your Portfolio The opening minutes of the trading day can often feel like a storm.Institutional orders hit the tape, volume spikes and stocks whip around with little regard for retail investors. Its tempting to jump in immediately, but that can lead you to chase the noise instead of making delib-erate moves.A better approach is to use this time to manage your portfolio with discipline. That might mean trimming back on positions that are losing momentum or simply monitoring the behavior of your stock holdings as early volatility shakes out.The goal is to preserve capital and gather information, not force trades.MarketSurge makes this process easier with its Open Stock Ideas tool, which pulls directly from the Growth 250a curated list of growth stocks with the strongest potential for gains.Gather key insights from these custom reports without manually screening thousands of stocks.Breaking Out Today pinpoints stocks that cleared their buy point during the most recent trading session Near Pivot highlights stock setups that are close to actionable but not extended.Breakaway Gaps flags stocks break-ing out from a base with a strong gap up,often driven by earnings or other major newsAnother tool to work into your routine is the RS Line Blue Dot report. This powerful screen surfaces stocks that are strongly outperforming the S&P 500 benchmark while also forming bases or breaking out of basesoften the very names that go on to become new mar-ket leaders.Having this report on your radar each morning can give you an edge when it comes to spotting emerg-ing leadership early. To stay flexible, you should also take advantage of MarketSurges alert system. To set up alerts for a specific stock, launch the chart tool in Market-Surge,then enter the ticker symbol for the stock you want to track.Open the Screens,Alerts&Notes panel to the left side of the screen and click Alerts Set Alert.A Set Price Alert window will ap-pear on the screen for you to then enter your target price.By setting price alerts on key stocks, you can step away from your desk without missing a beat.Real-time notifications to your mobile device(via the Market-Surge app)let you monitor critical price changes so youre always ready to act.Plus, youll be free from the distraction of constantly monitoring prices.Moving Beyond Individual Stocks:Groups and Rotation One of the most effective ways to Feature Article Building a Winning Trading Routine:Habits for Lasting SuccessMarketS 2025 Mid-Year Stock Guide 9identify big winners is by looking beyond individual stocks and focusing instead on the strength of industry groups containing the best-performing stocks. To do this, traders should regularly check the 197 Industry Groups list in MarketSurge, which you can find by pressing the Open Stock Ideas button and clicking Weekly Review.Once youve opened the list, you can sort groups based on their industry group rank and quickly see which groups are leading the charge.Pay attention to groups that have climbed steadily in rank over the past 36 months,as they often point you to emerging opportunities. You also want to regularly watch for group rotation.Monitoring shifts across the top 2550 groups helps you stay aligned with where institutional money is flowing, rather than clinging to yester-days winners that may be nearing the ends of their big moves.Tools of the Trade:Stock Screens Custom screens can also add a layer of structure to your routine.MarketSurge offers a range of pre-curated stock listsyou can copy, refine and then save these lists to your Favorites tab.By layering in stricter filters that match your preferences, you can create a person-alized dashboard that surfaces only the setups most relevant to you. This way, your routine embodies your unique investing style.Putting It All Together Theres no one-size-fits-all approach to trading, but there are some universal truths worth applying.1.Preparation beats reaction.Start your day with futures and curated newsuse the Market Snapshot and the Big Picture column to understand the broader market environment.2.Make good use of the market open.Use the first 30 minutes of trading to monitor and manage your positionsdont chase noise by rushing to new trades.3.Leverage MarketSurge reports.Focus on Breaking Out Today,Near Pivot,RS Line Blue Dot and industry groups rankings to surface new opportunities.4.Customize and refine your approach.Build custom stock screens and set alerts to fit your investing style. At the end of the day, trading is a game of probabilities. What matters most is establishing a routine that keeps you grounded and consistent.A structured routine doesnt guarantee success, but it can dramatically improve your odds by reducing emotion and anchoring you to a process you can repeat. With Market-Surges tools and the IBD Methodology, youll have a framework that not only keeps you organized but also puts you in a position to seize emerging opportu-nities with greater confidence.Building a Winning Trading Routine:Habits for Lasting Success Feature Article 102025 in 1999,and after nearly a decade of trial and error,he transformed his approach by embracing William ONeils principles and later co-leading the NYC IBD Meetup group.Today,Mike mentors investors as part of the Minervini Private Access coaching team, helping his clients sharpen both their technical skills and mental edge.MarketSurge recently caught up with Mike to discuss the lessons from his trading journey and the role psychology plays in long-term success. He also shared insights from his work as a mindset coach, why mental skills are just as critical as chart reading and how traders can stay disciplined in fast-moving environments. You began trading in the late 90s as a self-taught part-time trader, eventually stumbling on William ONeils How to Make Money in Stocks and the IBD Meetup group in New York City. How did that turning point reshape your own trading mindset and approach? Before I discovered William ONeil and the NYC IBD Meetup group,I was winging it.In 1999 I shoveled money into mutual funds, assuming“buy, wait and it grows.”By 2002 I was down about 20%and learned the hard way that handing money to pros,over-diversifying and blind patience dont guarantee results.I then tried averaging down because“the story hasnt changed”and torched 40%on a single name. That nearly pushed me out of the market altogether. In 2010,a coworker gave me a copy of How to Make Money in Stocks.I studied it like a textbook, found IBD and started attending the NYC Meetup monthly.Being around serious tradersand treating trading like a businesschanged everything for me.Within a Mike LamotheA CONVERSATION WITHQ&A A Conversation with Mike LamotheBeing around serious tradersand treating trading like a businesschanged everything for me.MarketS 2025 Mid-Year Stock Guide 13year I was consistent enough to be invited to co-lead the group. The core shift:have a system, size positions intelligently, manage risk first and execute the same edge repeatedly so the math can work over many trades.Youve stated that efficiency in trading“starts in the mind with clear focus and beliefs,”not just tools or tactics.Could you unpack the difference between mindset-driven efficiency and technical execution?Theyre inseparable, but mindset leads.Technical execution is the rule set:entries,exits,sizing,risk.Mindset-driven efficiency is the belief system that makes those rules executable under pressure.Anyone can understand rules, but few internalize them.Mindset turns“I know”into“I do”via conviction built on journaling,post-analysis and scheduled reviews. Its not stubbornly repeating a planits trusting a tested process and refining it through evidence. In your book,The Trading Mindwheel:Eight Essential Skills for Trading Mastery, you outline a comprehensive skill roadmap. Can you highlight one or two of these skills that you tend to see transform traders most immediately?Mindset is your beliefs and belief systems.Write your beliefs about trading, money and yourself.Set a 510 minute timer for each and keep writingeven if you feel stuck.Define goals and why trading is your vehicle. Then compare:which beliefs support or conflict with those goals?Journaling turns experience into evidence.Capture setups, emotions, stats and outcomes.Do weekly post-analysis.That cadence exposes what works, what doesnt and where beliefs need updating. What are some recurring mental blocks you see traders face? How do you help them overcome these? The big one:the need to be right(and fear of being wrong). Many try to copy their mentors perfectly and freeze when the results differ. What helps:structured feedback loops and real community.Mentorship, meetups or coaching shorten the learning curve, clarify nuance and separate“market problems”from“process problems.”Add journaling/post-analysis and your confidence shifts from“I hope”to“I know my process.”Youve shared a trading routine that can help set traders up for success. Can you walk us through how you put those steps into practice?Keep it consistent and simple.A Conversation with Mike Lamothe Q&ALet stocks lead you to the newsnot the other way around.142025 Mid-Year Stock Guide MarketSWeekly screens to create a universe list.Run the same screens on a schedule.Track whats entering/exiting,which groups/sectors are expanding, and where setups cluster.Let stocks lead you to the newsnot the other way around.Daily monitoring. Are watchlist names breaking out, stalling or failing? Is strength concentrated within specific groups?Portfolio as barometer. If my best-quali-ty buys dont gain traction,I get cautious. If they do gain traction,I press.Written business plan.Document your routines and risk rules. If it isnt written,it isnt part of the business.Be intentional about information intake(social media and news)to avoid hobby-level randomness. Many traders focus heavily on charts and fundamentals but overlook mind-set.Whats one practical exercise our readers could start doing tomorrow to build mental resilience in trading?Run a Belief Evidence Conviction audit:Beliefs:List your top beliefs about trading, money and yourself(510 minutes each).Evidence:For each belief, write the supporting data(journal stats, backtests, samples).Conviction(on a scale of 110):Any-thing less than an eight needs testing or revision.Breathwork and meditation(and for me,prayer)are powerful amplifiers, but re-silience ultimately comes from evidence that your edge wins over many trades. In recent years, weve seen an influx of retail traders thanks to zero-commission online brokers, social media and the meme stock craze. How do you see the role of mindset evolving as more democratized platforms reshape the trading environment?Lower barriers equal easier blowups.Mindset matters more because most skip the“boring work”:journaling, grading trades and post-analysis.Thats the separator. The platforms changed access;profes-sionalism still looks like written routines,Mindset matters more because most skip the boring work:journaling, grading trades and post-analysis.Thats the separator.Q&A A Conversation with Mike LamotheMarketS 2025 Mid-Year Stock Guide 15clear risk rules, scheduled reviews and continuous belief-testing.How do you personally reset after a tough trade or drawdown period to get back into peak performance mode?First, normalize it.With around 200 trades/year and a 50%win rate, expect losing streaks of around eight to nine trades.Predictablestill not fun.My reset playbook:Process check:Journal/post-analysisam I on-or off-process?Fix deviations fast.Re-anchor to success:Review my model booksWilliam ONeil and Mark Minervini model stocks and my own marked-up winnersto remind myself leaders do emerge and I can execute when conditions align.Tactical throttle:Cut risk, tighten criteria and earn the right to size back up.Looking back, what personal habit or belief has contributed the most to your longevity and resilience as a trader? Two pillars:perseverance(a gift from my dadtheres a story about him early in The Trading Mindwheel)and proximity to excellence.Surrounding myself with great peoplementors like Mark Minervini and serious peers from the IBD Meetupkept standards high and feedback real.Drive plus the right community compounds. And finally, outside of trading, what are your go-to practices or rituals for refocusing and staying mentally sharp?Prayermorning, midday, evening and night.Different forms(scriptural, meditative, intercessory, communal)reset me to gratitude and first principles.Think race-car pit stops:brief, intentional resets so you can run fast longer, not until the wheels fall off.A Conversation with Mike Lamothe Q&A162025 Mid-Year Stock Guide MarketSGood Trade/Bad Trade Harold Morris GOOD TRADE:MP Materials(MP)The Timeframe:June 2025-Present Stock Background:MP Materials is the only U.S.company mining and process-ing rare earth elements, which are used in everything from electric vehicles to military defense systems.China has long dominated the rare earths space,con-trolling around 90%of global processing and refining capacity.Earlier this year, when trade tensions with China flared over tariffs, rare earths quickly became part of the geopolitical conversation. The U.S.government wanted to show it could secure its own supply of these critical minerals and not depend on overseas supply.Thats where MP Materials comes in.In July 2025,the company secured a 10-year contract with the U.S.Department of Defense to supply rare earths. This deal included a guaranteed price floor and the Pentagons commitment to purchase 100%of its magnets from MPs second domestic facility, slated for magnet manufacturing. That part is especially significant because rare earths are processed into magnets, which are used in EV motors and batteries, wind turbine generators, smartphone components and other critical technologies. This news gave me more conviction that this was a stock with a real story as opposed to just a short-term pop.Technical Picture:Earlier in the year,MP had been hovering relatively close to its 50-day moving average line without making any big moves. On June 4,it broke above the 50-day on heavy volume, flashing an early entry opportunity. It was already building a cup base and now had reached a price level around 24,not far from its prior high in April of 29.72.This gave it the potential to serve as the next buy point if the base continued to form. The stock came into focus for me on June 9 when it was added to the IBD Live Ready List.By that point,I could tell from the chart that MP was telling a pretty clear story. My Buy Point:June 11,2025 at 25.My first buy of MP was a half-size posi-tion on June 11,when it fell but found support at the 50-day moving average.A couple of days later on June 13,the stock rallied and broke out of its cup-shaped base on volume 179ove average.Thats when I doubled my MP shares and established a full position at a price just over 30.Harold MorrisMarketSurge CoachGood Trade/Bad TradeTHE TRADERMarketS 2025 Mid-Year Stock Guide 17Harold Morris Good Trade/Bad TradeHow I Held It:I established my full posi-tion on June 13 and MP ran up 32%from there(as indicated by the“green flag”in MarketSurge charts, which I like using).Once a stock goes up 20%or more from a buy point,I take some profits.Thats what I did here, selling about 32%of my position. When you get a strong move like that, you dont know if its going to keep goingso I like to take at least some profits when I can.The stock started to pull back around the last week of June and into the first week of July, but I held the rest of my position because it was a pullback on very light volume, which usually indicates that institutional buyers are holding their shares as well.My Sell Point:This is a position I still hold today. The stock blasted off after the July 10 announcement of the 10-year contract with the DoD,gaining over 50%on that day alone. And since I had already taken some profits when it hit 30%,I felt good about staying in.Now,Im looking for another opportunity to add more shares to my position to make up for those that I sold back in June.My 3 Takeaways:Always stay engaged and ready.MP was flying under the radar until it popped up on the IBD Live Ready List.We talked it over on the morning show(where Im a weekly panelist)in the days leading up to my purchase. Those conversations with my colleagues helped me confirm it was a trade worth keeping on my radar.Dont be afraid of selling into strength. When a stock gives you a strong move,it can be tempting to hold everything and hope for even more, but thats not always the smartest play.Taking money off the table in that situation doesnt mean youre doubting the stocks potentialit means youre staying disciplined and protecting gains. That balance between confidence and caution is what keeps you in the game for the long haul.Monitor price and volume closely.Looking at the charts tells you not only where the stocks going, but also how institutions are acting in real time. When I realized MP was starting to pull back,I wasnt just focusing on the price decline alone, but also the fact that it came on light volume.Paying attention to both price and volume together can give you the conviction to hold when the chart says strength is still thereand thats often what separates a good trade from a great one.182025 Mid-Year Stock Guide MarketSGood Trade/Bad Trade Harold MorrisBAD TRADE:Palo Alto Networks(PANW)The Timeframe:May 2025-July 2025Stock Background:PANW is one of the big names in cybersecurity, and Ive trad-ed it before with success. The stock has moved up 11%this year, and the funda-mentals looked solid going into late May.Palo Alto Networks had just reported its fiscal Q3 results on May 20.Earn-ings and revenue came in a little better than expected, while guidance mostly matched what analysts were looking for. While reports stated strong recur-ring revenue, free cash flow and other growth metrics werent as impressive.Even so,the overall picture was of a company that has been on a trajectory of growth and expansion. In late April,PANW made headlines when it an-nounced a$500 million acquisition of Protect AI in a move to boost its defens-es against AI-driven attacks. It was the companys biggest deal since 2020.Overall,Palo Alto Networks seemed like a company with the leadership and story to keep playing a big role in the cyber-security industry thats been so strong this year.Technical Picture:Beyond its high Com-posite Rating of 98 and the acceleration of the last three quarters sales,PANW was setting up well.By late May,it was tracing a cup-with-handle pattern with a 195.42 buy point. The stock had already staged a big run earlier in the Spring, from about 400 to 480,and was now building a new base. From a technical standpoint,it checked a lot of boxes:a leader in its group, shaping a constructive base and show-ing the kind of setup that seemed like it could easily launch higher.Heading into May 30,it was finding support right at the 21-day moving average, which I saw as an early entry point. My Buy Point:May 30,2025 at 192.I bought a half position in PANW on May 30 at around 192,making an early entry when it showed support at the 21-day line.On June 2,the stock powered toward the pivot point of 195.42 from a cup-with-handle base and I added more shares to make it a full position in my portfolio. How I Held It:Initially, everything seemed to be working well, with the stock trending up and confirming the breakout. But on July 10,news of PANWs executive vice president selling off a large portion of shares led to a major selloff of 6.8%.That day,the stock broke below its 21-day and 50-day moving average lines, triggering one of my personal sell rules.Normally,Id be out right there, but this time I didnt actI got complacent.I thought,“Its Palo Alto, itll come back.”MarketS 2025 Mid-Year Stock Guide 19Harold Morris Good Trade/Bad TradeThe stock did end up bouncing back to new highs after that July 10 selloff, which made it even harder for me to pull the plug and sell.Behind the scenes,inves-tors were starting to rethink the story.By July 29,reports came out that PANW was going to acquire security solutions company CyberArk(CYBR)in a$25B cash-and-stock deal. The announcement rattled investors and PANW took a hard hit, selling off on heavy volume with a 5.2%drop on that day.My Sell Point:July 30,2025 at 179.I finally got out on July 30 at around 179 when it gapped down again even further. If I had just followed my rules on July 10 when it broke below the 21-day and 50-day lines,I would have taken a much smaller loss.My 3 Takeaways:Dont get complacent.Just because a stock has traded well in the past doesnt mean it will bail you out the next time.Thats the trap I fell into here.In this case,my past wins with PANW made me a little too comfortable, and that comfort gave me a false sense of security.Instead of reacting quickly when the stock broke down,I told myself it would bounce back because it always had before.Thats a dangerous mindset. It makes you second-guess your rules and give a stock way more credit than it deserves. It reminded me that every trade is its own,and relying on past success is no substitute for paying attention to whats happening at that moment in time.Follow your rules. One of my hard rules is to sell when a stock falls below two key moving averages. It keeps me disciplined, and most of the time protects me from letting a small loss turn into a big one.Ignoring that rule cost me here.I shouldve sold when the stock broke below both the 21-day and the 50-day lines, but instead I rationalized and made excuses, telling myself it would recover.Having rules is one thing, but they dont mean much if you dont follow themespecially when emotions are telling you to wait.Ignoring them here cost me money and time that could have been spent on better trades.Discipline over everything. No matter how strong the market feels or how much you like the story, stick to what the charts are telling you.PANW looked like a great buyand it was for a time. But the market didnt react well to the July 10 and July 29 news, which spooked investors and sent shares tumbling. Both moments called for discipline, but I hung on longer than I should have and paid the price. If youre not disciplined, youll end up holding through avoidable damage rather than freeing yourself up to move onto the next opportunity.202025 Mid-Year Stock Guide MarketS20Good Trade:MP Materials(MP)Bought Half-Position:25Sold 1/3 of
