Dr. Tad Dallas is an assistant professor in biological sciences, specializing in disease ecology. He has published 79 papers and developed 4 R packages, with a focus on ecology and disease, and a current shift towards applying machine learning to understand human infectious diseases. He has received grants from NSF for COVID-19 research and VERENA creation, but has faced rejections from NIH, including a MIRA and an NIAID Data Science Methods and Algorithm Development grant, with one R21 proposal being close to funding. He is participating in the PROPEL Grant Writing Program and the NIH Early Career Reviewer Program, and has received targeted mentorship and a clear plan for learning objectives through an R25 program, which has also provided opportunities to interface with public health professionals. His next steps include learning the differences between NSF and NIH proposals and developing R01 and R21 proposals with colleagues. He can be contacted at tdallas@mailbox.sc.edu or through his website.
