5G Automotive Association (5GAA) is a global, cross-industry association that aims to develop, test and promote 5G standards for connected vehicles. As of September 2016, 8 companies joined forces to establish the 5GAA, which now has 115 members worldwide. The association focuses on executing and implementing connected infrastructure technology and services, and has regional/national strategies in EU, US, APAC, and India. Key federal government entities involved in connected vehicle regulations include the Department of Transportation, Federal Highway Administration, ITS - Joint Program Office, Volpe Center, Federal Communications Commission, Department of Commerce, National Telecommunications and Information Administration, Bureau of Industry and Security, Department of Energy, various national labs, NTSB, and U.S. Congress. In the US, 5GAA has pushed for FCC waivers for initial deployments of C-V2X Direct in the 5.9 GHz band, engaged in dialogue with FHWA on digital infrastructure, contributed to USDOT National Draft V2X Deployment Plan, highlighted risks of harmful interference in 5.9 and 6 GHz bands, and filed comments on BIS ANPRM on connected vehicles. The association has also advocated for Smart Infrastructure funding with members of Congress and collaborated with DOT and other industry trade organizations for final rules. Expectedly, the FCC will vote on the Final 5.9 GHz Band Report & Order within upcoming weeks, and the DOC/BIS NPRM regarding Connected Vehicle Technologies is due this month.
