电阻器的阻值由电阻体决定。电阻器包括电阻体、骨架和引出端三部分组成,电阻体阻值的大小受到长度、截面积和所使用材料的电阻率的影响。对于多数导体,在稳定的外界条件下,电阻几乎维持为一定值,这类电阻被称为是线性电阻;而有些材料在电流或者电压变化时,其伏安特性也会随之改变,因此电阻值是动态变化的,被归类为非线性电阻,同样得到了广泛的应用。纯金属的电阻率一般较小,适合制作导线,而合金的电阻率较大,适合制作电阻。借助于其它的物理特性,还可以设计出对某种物理量具有敏感特性的电阻,例如热敏、湿敏、光敏、压敏电阻器,这类电阻在外界条件变化时,阻值也会发生改变。
